Good Fit Books

Since I blogged last, I've started taking Foundations of Library and Information Studies, finally got AR up and running, and published my first school newsletter.  The following is an article that I wrote for the newsletter.  I changed the names of the students.

Students had fun learning about picking books that interest them, are on their level, and is just right for their purpose. To make it fun we compared “Good-Fit Books to picking out shoes.   We read Pete the Cat: Rocking in His School Shoes, and we talked about our school shoes.  Students agreed that wearing skates to school would not be a good idea.  We read other books about shoes, and talked about how choosing a book is like choosing shoes. 

Do I like it?  Does it interest me?  My pig slippers interest me, because I like pigs.  I have a small collection of pigs.  I would enjoy reading the Olivia books that we have in the library.  One of my favorite books is Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini.  Just because I like my pig slippers, and stories about pigs, does not mean that my best friend will be interested in pigs.

Does it fit? It is not too easy or too hard.   My pig slippers fit me.  They were not too small or too big.  When Ray tried on my slippers, they were too big.  Although Ray might like books about pigs, he probably would not be able to read Charlotte’s Web about Wilbur the pig. A “Good-Fit” book for Trey might be If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff.  Choosing a book that is too easy or too hard will not help us become good readers.  My pig slippers are comfortable to me, but my granddaughter’s tap shoes were too small.  I would not be comfortable in her shoes.

Does it help me?  Is the book right for what I want to do?  Duncan tried to play basketball in my fancy high heels.  It did not work.  My pig slippers did not help me play basketball or tap dance.  Fourth graders are not going to read Good Night Moon to learn about the moon phases. 

I hope the shoe lesson will help students remember to pick books that interest them, fit, and help them with their purpose for reading.  The lesson was adapted from The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades, by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.

The students have been decorating "browsing sticks".  I will share how we plan to use the sticks in a later post.

Co-Teacher

Cari at The Centered School Library made me think, "How can my library space be used more effectively?"  I had several windows that I covered because I didn't like looking into a storage room, my office, and a kitchenette.  I didn't know what I was going to display on these make-shift bulletin boards. Cari's post put things into perspective for me.  My library space is my "co-teacher" and should be used in a way that students will benefit.

There is one cork bulletin board that I decided to use as a theme board. The Library Vocabulary board will be interactive. Students will write definitions for library vocabulary, in their own words.  I will choose a few to display.  PBIS board also includes our matrix for expected behaviors in different areas of the school.  It will not change throughout the year.

Some Daily 5 components will be used in the library.  Students are already looking for "Good Fit" books. Once I have met with each class, I will display the "Good Fit" anchor chart near the circulation desk.

I'm going to move this Genre set to a more prominent spot.  Right now the set is in a corner.  I will put a fun quote in it's place.

I am anxious to find out how others are using their library spaces as a co-teacher.

Moving In

Thanks to my niece and her friend, we were able to move my junk treasures to the media center. No need for Zumba when you're moving six years worth of teaching materials to another part of campus. We really got a work-out.

This week I have been busy unpacking and setting up the media center.  I never realized there were so many little closets and storage areas in the media center.  The school Cricut and laminator have been hot - figuratively and literally. I was able to take several "before" pictures, but only one "after" picture.  The custodian had to put me out. Time sure does fly when you're having fun.

I didn't like looking at the back of the bookcase through the window.  With bulletin board paper and my Locker Talk Cricut cartridge, it looks better. I'll add a quote or use it to display rules. The poster will stay for now.

This is one of the small closets.  Right now it holds some outdated technology and decorations. It will probably be used for decorations and props, once the techy stuff is removed.  There's another small closet across the room, which is mostly used to store Book Fair set-up items.

I am in the process of re-doing the bulletin board and windows on this wall. Instead of doing a theme, I'm using blues, yellow, and green dots to decorate.  It will be easier to work polka-dots into the Book Fair themes.  The PBIS window will remain, but with my polka-dot color theme.  The "Library Star" board will be used for an "Author Study" or theme.

I will only work one or two days next week.  I would like to take a mini vacation before the teacher work days start.

Coin Poem Poster

In order to make sure that my first graders were able to identify and know the value of coins, I usually use play money as part of my classroom management.  This year I decided to use the clip chart management system, at the beginning of school.   After Christmas, I integrated play money with the clip chart management system.  Several students had a difficult time with counting their money, so I needed something to help them.  We memorized the Coin Poem which I found on Pinterest.  I sent copies of the poem home with the students too.

Someone had given me some extra large coins from Dollar Tree.  I already had the star border, also from Dollar Tree.  After I glued everything onto yellow bulletin board paper,  it was still missing something.  I found some coin stickers in my sticker drawer.  My Dollar Tree border turned into an original border.

I found my students using the poster throughout the year. They also reminded each other to use the poster when they noticed a classmate having trouble.  I only wish I had thought of it sooner.  Although I will not be using this type of behavior management in the media center, I thought it would helpful for other teachers.

New Job Title Means New Blog Title

The "Waiting Game" is over.  I am now the media specialist for our school.  Although the previous media specialist tried to convince me that she wears tiny shoes, I know that I have some big shoes to fill.  I am so excited, but nervous because there are so many things to learn. 

I have been trying to get rid of stuff and pack up for the big move.  I can't believe that I kept some bulletin boards, but didn't have pictures of them.  I'm sure that I took pictures, but they must have been saved on our old, discarded desktops.  Here's one of the bulletin boards that I kept. 

Since I'll be the media specialist, I'll be integrating math, science, and social studies with the stories that I'll read. Tops and Bottoms made our plant unit really fun, when I did it about three years ago.  The students labeled the vegetable parts, made a graph, and wrote about their favorite plant parts to eat. I was able to save the bulletin board, because it was done in three different sections. I have already started "pinning" ideas to use as a media specialist. 

Now, what would be a good title for my blog?  I will mostly blog about and share examples of how I integrate different subjects with popular children's stories. I will also blog about how the students use technology for some of the activities.  I don't want to change the blog address, because I've done that before, and lost several followers. I'm open for suggestions about a title and post ideas.
